Grandies on the Beach
The brief for this commission was to paint a diptich of a pair of siblings, two grandchildren, each lost in their own little world at the water’s edge, close to each other but absorbed in their own private discoveries and imaginings. There is something really special about sibling relationships and childhood: that ability to be together yet completely separate, sharing the same beach, the same moment, but experiencing it in entirely different ways.
The grandson seems more contemplative, perhaps watching the waves or examining something in the sand with quiet focus. Whilst the granddaughter with her joyful floral hat and colorful outfit, is actively engaged with something - collecting shells or building in the sand. You can sense their different personalities just from their postures and the way they occupy their space.
Each child gets their own canvas, their own moment, their own dream world, yet they’re clearly part of the same day, the same beach, the same family story.
It’s such a great commission for a grandmother - capturing not just what her grandchildren look like, but who they are as individuals. Paintings commissioned like these are a perfect gift to pass down the generations.
